| WATER SOFTENING UNITS WITH AUTOMATIC REGENERATION |
Classified under cations, calcium and magnesium are the most important factors that determine the roughness of water. It is very well known that rough water causes countless number of problems, mainly to human health. It is seen that especially the companies and various factories which uses water in production faces with great numbers of harms and loss because of rough water. At the same time in household usage rough water causes damages that are very difficult to repair to the water installation and to the devices that works with water, such as washing machines and dishwashers. These problems encountered both in commercial and household usage brings a great deal of loss to the countries economy.
One of the best ways to overcome these problems is to use the ion exchange method. Sodium ion is added to replace calcium and magnesium ions. As a result softening of water can be obtained with cationic resin. Tank type of the water-softening unit can be either composite body or AISI 304-316 stainless steel, depending on desire. The automation of a water-softening unit can be gathered under three main headings:
a. Timer Control Based on a timely period, it performs the regeneration process on the desired time and day of the week, needing no interference.
b. Volumetric Control It measures the amount of water passing through by a counter mounted on the device, and when the regeneration level that is pre-programmed or set is reached, performs the regeneration process automatically. It is very appropriate to use this type of control valves especially in systems with duplex (tandem) tanks. These types of units, more widely used in industrial areas, provide continuous soft water flow.
c. Roughness Measurement Control This kind of water-softening devices, controlled by the help of a switchboard panel, continuously measures the water roughness value and when the roughness level that is pre-programmed or set is exceeded; performs the regeneration process automatically.
The regeneration of water-softening units is obtained with salt. Approximate salt consumption is 0.2 kg for every litre of resin. Not to harm the devices, the regeneration must be done with refined tablet salt. The most important issue during designing phase of the water softeners before the application is to know that the conductivity level, which is determined by resin manufacturers, should not be exceeded. |
